As a parent, you may wonder whether your pre-schooler has a vision  problem or when a first eye exam should be scheduled.  Eye exams for  children are extremely important. Experts say 5 to 10% of pre-schoolers  and 25% of school-aged children have vision problems. Early detection of  a child's vision problem is crucial because, if left untreated, some  childhood vision issues can cause permanent vision loss. 

According to the Ontario Doctors of Optometry the following guidline  was developed about when your child should have their eyes checked:   

• Infants: between 6-9 months of age 
• Toddlers: at least 1 eye exam between the ages of 2 to 5 
• School age: annual comprehensive eye exams by an Optometrist 

80% of a child's learning is obtained through vision.Vision occurs in  partnership with the brain and eyes. Children who struggle with reading  or remain on task may have an undiagnosed vision problem. Children only  see the world through their eyes so have no idea if what they are seeing  is clear or not. In a recent study 61% of Canadian parents mistakenly  believe they would know if their child was having difficulty with their  eyesight. Which is why it is so important to have annual eye exam. In  the province of Ontario: Annual Routine Eye exams for children up to  the age of 19 are covered by OHIP.   
Early eye exams also are important because children need the following basic visual skills for learning:  

• Near vision
• Distance vision
• Eye teaming (binocularity) skills
• Eye movement skills
• Focusing skills
• Peripheral awareness
• Eye/hand coordination
